| Producer-director, the late Moustapha Akkad made a true labor of love out of The Message, which seeks nothing less than to tell the story of the origins of Islam. Originally released in the U.S. as Mohammad, Messenger of God, the film has the appeal of most biblical epics: persecuted true believers, the revolutionary Prophet Muhammad, upon whom be God's peace and blessings, scorned by the unbelievers of Makkah, and the miraculous triumph of faith. It is generally entertaining (and informative for those unversed in the life story of the Holy Prophet). Director Akkad' one major hurdle was that he could not portray the person or voice of Mohammad himself, this being forbidden. Akkad tackles this cinematic challenge in innovative manner by having characters address the camera, or having disciples step out of the Prophet's tent to repeat what the Prophet has just said. Akkad is aided by topnotch technicians, while Anthony Quinn, Irene Papas, and Michael Ansara lead the cast. |
